Veterans helping Veterans through community service

American Legion
Preamble
For God and Country, we associate ourselves together for the following purposes:
To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a 100-percent Americanism; to preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in all wars; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state, and nation; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses; to make right the master of might; to promote peace and good will on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom, and democracy; to consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.
WHAT WE DO

VETERANS HELPING VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES
Part of the mission of the Scenic City Heroes is to help veterans and their families with unforeseen struggles. Whether it is food or clothing or other issues, we try to help ALL veterans in need.
BUILDILNG COMRADERY
Building comradery is important to veterans. We are a close family as most of us have been since we served. We meet weekly in a judgement free zone, at the Post, to socialize (listen to music, watch TV, and play cards/dominoes). Buddy Checks are performed throughout the year to check on veterans and to ensure our veterans have the support they need.
Veteran Center Food Drive
We participate in the Veteran Centers' Annuel Food Drive collecting, sorting, and preparing food boxes for distribution to veterans and their families in need at Christmas. We also have ongoing support for a local veteran that distributes food throughout the year to veterans in need.
ANNUAL BICYCLE DRIVE
We sponsor an annual bicycle drive where we collect new and gently used bicycles for distribution to other local non-profit organizations with children's programs and we also donate to local families in need.
ABOUT US
Established in 2018, the mission of the newly formed "Scenic City Heroes (SCH) American Legion Post 291," addresses the concerns of the community for which it was founded, more especially the Veteran Community. We welcome all honorably discharged veterans with a DD Form 214.
Devotion to service is our focus and inspires us to address the many needs associated with veterans and their families. We are focused on assisting and partnering with local schools, churches, businesses, venues, and other areas of our community in need of service and support. We sponsor programs geared to High School students for participation in various camps and scholarship programs as well as performance and academic excellence of JROTC Students.
We serve as a resource for veterans to address many concerns to include both mental and physical. We assist veterans in identifying a course of action when seeking disability compensation for in-service injuries.
The American Legion is a non-sectarian not-for-profit organization. We are not politically based. However, we advocate for participation in the process. We are not religious based yet encourage brotherly love and community awareness. The strength of The Legion is in its numbers. We have lobbyists that exert political influence for Veteran-friendly legislation local, state, and federal levels.
We provide a venue for the gathering and fellowship of our veterans to form camaraderie and enforce our patriotic bond. We use proceeds of our fundraising endeavors to invest in activities designed to support Veterans and their families, community events, and promote community awareness of our presence.

We partner with local and national entities that have long supported our community and enthusiastically invite new supporters. We continually seek our supporter's commitment to our concerns as we continue to support and patronize their establishments. We seek to recognize companies that are "veteran friendly" employers.
The Scenic City Heroes' aim is to assist veterans with their transition into civilian life and to offer them assistance while adjusting to often new surroundings. We want to provide solutions for problems that veterans face. We ask the support and commitment of our fellow veterans, their families, the communities, and churches, to join us in uplifting our various communities and to enhance the future of our youth through hard work and dedication to a just cause.
